Positioned at the Sun-Earth Lagrange 1 point (L1), SOLAR-1 constantly faces the sun to observes the sun’s corona or outer solar atmosphere Because SOLAR-1 is located upstream along the Sun-Earth line, it can measure incoming solar wind (thate flow of charged particaled) before it reaches Earth and causes space weather effects.

From that unique vantage point, SOLAR-1 supplies images of the Sun’s corona and measurements of the solar wind, its particles, and magnetic field to NOAA forecasters. These measurements are the basis for some of the earliest warnings and alerts for space weather that can impact astronaut health and safety, satellite applications such as GPS and communications, and electric power grid management.
