DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z October 27, 2026

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S.…
Multiple fires from the Carolinas to Mississippi produced individual
smoke plumes of varying density drifting westward to southwestward. A
broad area of of light-density smoke was observed across much of the
Southeastern U.S. before drifting northeastward into the Atlantic Ocean
and southward into the Gulf of America. The smoke may include remnant
smoke from agricultural fires in the region yesterday.

California…
Fires in the northern Central Valley of California were observed producing
a layer of light-to-heavy density smoke drifting northward, while fires
in the central portion of the state produced light-to-heavy density smoke
plumes drifting north to west. A broad layer of light-density smoke was
observed along the coast of California before drifting northward towards
Oregon, westward into the Pacific Ocean, and southward towards Mexico.

Arkansas…
Despite significant cloud cover, fires in Arkansas and Missouri were
observed producing a light-to-heavy density smoke plumes drifting north
to northwestward.

Arizona…
A fire in central Arizona was observed producing a light-density smoke
plume extending northeastward.

Mexico…
A layer of light-density smoke was observed along the western coast of
Mexico before drifting westward across the Gulf of California and into
the Pacific Ocean. A layer of light-to-moderate density smoke from fire
activity was also observed in southern Mexico and northern Guatemala
before drifting northwestward along the Mexican Gulf Coast, northward
into the Bay of Campeche, and southwestward into the Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
