DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z October 24, 2026

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S.…
Multiple fires across the Southeastern U.S. were active this
evening. Several individual fires in Western Alabama produced
light-density smoke plumes drifting West-Southwestward. The Bee Haven (2)
fire in Hamilton County, Florida produced light-density smoke that moved
southwestward over the Gulf of America. A larger area of light-density
smoke covered much of Mississippi Valley, extending southwestward into
the Gulf.

Mississippi Valley…
Numerous individual smoke plumes were observed over the Mississippi
Valley this evening. The fires produced light to moderate-density smoke
plumes drifting westward.

Louisiana Gulf Coast…
Large amount of individual fires were observed producing mainly light
to moderate-density smoke with some heavy-density smoke plumes drifting
westward.

Michigan…
An isolated fire in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan was observed
producing heavy to light-density smoke plume drifting Northeastward.

Mexico…
A layer of light-to-moderate density smoke was observed along the western
coast of Mexico and drifting southwestward into the Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
