DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z October 3, 2026

SMOKE:
Western U.S.…
The Dome and Piute Fires in central California were observed producing
localized heavy-to-moderate density smoke plumes, as well as a layer
of light-density smoke that drifted northward and westward within the
state. A fire north of Los Angeles was observed producing a plume of
light-to-heavy density smoke that drifted westward. Multiple fires
spanning northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and western
Montana were observed producing localized light-to-heavy density smoke
plumes that drifted generally northward. A remnant layer of light-density
smoke was observed drifting southwestward over the Pacific Ocean offshore
of southern California and western Mexico.

Southeastern U.S./Atlantic Ocean…
A layer of remnant light-density smoke was observed spanning the coast of
the southeastern United States this evening, before drifting northeastward
into the Atlantic Ocean.

Mexico/Pacific Ocean…
Multiple fires in northern Baja California were observed producing
light-to-heavy density smoke that drifted westward. A fire in western
Sonora was observed producing light-to-moderate smoke that drifted
westward into the Bay of California. A remnant layer of moderate-density
smoke from yesterday’s agricultural burning and industrial activity
was observed over the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the Bay of Campeche this
evening. Remnant light-density smoke from the same sources was observed
spanning the Gulf of America and the Pacific coast of Oaxaca.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
