THROUGH 1500Z October 2, 2026

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S./Mississippi Valley...
Isolated fires across Virginia, Georgia, Alabama,a and Mississippi were
observed producing light-to-heavy density smoke plumes driftnet generally
northwestward to northeastward. A layer of remnant light-density smoke
was observed across the southeastern U.S. and extending off the eastern
U.S. coast and into the Atlantic Ocean.

Pacific Northwest...
Isolated fires in Idaho and Washington were observed producing
light-to-moderate density smoke drifting generally eastward.

California...
The Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park continued to burn this morning,
producing light-to-moderate density smoke drifting northward.

Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of America...
A remnant layer of moderate-density smoke from yesterday’s agricultural
burning and industrial activity was observed along the Mexican coast and
the southwestern Gulf of America. A remnant layer of light-density smoke
was observed in the western Gulf of America and extending southward

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
