DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 30, 2026

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S.…
Multiple fires were active this morning across southeastern U.S.,
with several producing individual light-density smoke plumes,
particularly across southern Mississippi, Alabama, and along the
Georgia-Florida border. Smoke from fires along the Georgia-Florida
border and southeastern Alabama produced a moderate-density plume over
the area. Another moderate-density smoke plume was observed across South
Carolina and North Carolina, extending northeastward into Virginia and
the Atlantic Ocean. A broader light-density smoke plume covered much of
the southeastern U.S. and extended unto the northern Gulf of America,
while also extending northeastward from the Southeast into the Atlantic
Ocean. The smoke may also consist of smoke remnants from yesterday’s
agricultural fires in the region.

Oregon…
Fires across the state of Oregon were observed producing light-to-heavy
density smoke drifting southeastward within the state.

California…
The Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park continued to burn this morning. It
produced light-to-heavy density smoke that initially moved west-northwest
before shifting southward within the state.

Mexico/Gulf of America…
A layer of light-to-moderate density smoke from agricultural burning
and industrial activity was observed across the western Gulf of America
and along the Mexican Gulf coast, extending southward across the Isthmus
of Tehuantepec.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
