DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 29, 2026

SMOKE:
Canada/Greenland…
A layer of remnant light-density smoke was observed this morning moving
northeastward from northern Manitoba and over the Hudson Bay before
being obscured by cloud cover. The smoke reappeared off the coast of
Baffin Island and continued east-southeastward across Greenland before
dispersing into the Atlantic Ocean.

Southeastern U.S./Mississippi Valley…
A regional layer of remnant light-density smoke stretched from the
U.S. Gulf Coast and extended northward across the eastern Central Plains,
the Mississippi Valley, and further northward before dissipating over
Illinois. The plume also extended eastward across the southeastern
U.S. before continuing into the Atlantic Ocean and southward into the
Gulf of America, merging with smoke from Mexico.

Mexico/Gulf of America/Baja California Sur/Pacific Ocean…
A layer of light-density smoke from agricultural burning and industrial
activity was observed across most of the Gulf of America, continuing
southwards across the Mexican Gulf coast and crossing the Isthmus of
Tehuantepec. A large layer of medium-density smoke stretched northwards
over the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, continuing through the Bay of Campeche
and nearly reaching Texas. A remnant layer of light-density smoke
was observed drifting over the Pacific Coast of Mexico, the Gulf of
California, and Baja California Sur before continuing into the Pacific
Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
