DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500z September 26, 2026

SMOKE:
Canada…
An layer of remnant light density smoke was observed this morning moving
eastward over the southern Hudson Bay, including parts of northern
Ontario and eastern Quebec.

California…
The Dome Fire was observed producing local light-to-moderate density
smoke that drifted northward.

Southeastern U.S.…
Isolated agricultural fires located in Alabama and Georgia were observed
producing light-density smoke plumes that traveled generally southward. In
Florida, fires adjacent to Lake Okeechobee produced multiple light-density
smoke plumes. A layer of remnant light-density smoke from yesterday’s
fires was observed over southeastern Georgia and the central Florida
Panhandle before continuing into the Gulf. A large regional layer of
light-density smoke stretched from the U.S. Gulf Coast and traveled
westward towards Texas and southward into the Gulf of America, merging
with smoke from Mexico.

Mexico//Gulf of America/Baja California Sur/Pacific Ocean…
Remnant layers of light-density smoke from agricultural burning and
industrial activity was observed across most of the Gulf of America,
continuing southwards across the Mexican Gulf coast and approaching the
Isthmus of Tehuantepec. A plume of medium-density smoke from offshore
industrial activity was also observed in the Bay of Campeche. A remnant
layer of light-density smoke was observed drifting over Baja California
Sur and the Pacific Coast of Mexico before continuing into the Pacific
Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
