DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500 July 04, 2026

SMOKE:
Canada…
Wildfire activity in the central Northwest Territories, northeast
Saskatchewan and northwest Manitoba continued to produce large amounts of
heavy smoke across the region. Plumes moved northeast and medium-density
smoke spread into Nunavut and Hudson Bay. Medium smoke also spread east
across central Ontario and Quebec. A larger area of light smoke covered
the eastern region of the country as it circulated northeast with some
contribution from smoke moving north from the United States.

CONUS…
Multiple wildfires continued to burn in the western mountain region of
the United States. Large plumes of heavy smoke spread through valleys and
moved northeast from fires in Colorado and contributed to a larger area
of medium-density smoke that covered the region from Utah to Nebraska and
Kansas. Additional areas of medium-density smoke were observed to the east
from Missouri to Indiana, and across northern Alabama, Georgia, and South
Carolina. Heavier and medium-density smoke spread north and east into a
broad layer of light smoke that covered the eastern U.S. from the Rockies
to the Atlantic, and drifted offshore from the mid-Atlantic region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
