DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z July 01, 2026

SMOKE:
North America…
Widespread active fire activity was observed across central Canada
and across extreme west-central Quebec southeast to south-southeast of
James Bay, with more isolated activity across the Northwest Territory. A
separate area of scattered wildfire activity was also observed across
the Four Corners states. Smoke from these fires, and active fires from
the previous week or two, was contributing to an area of varying density
smoke that was blanketing an area covering much of northern, central,
and eastern Canada, the central and eastern CONUS, and the northern
Atlantic Ocean. Smoke emanating from fire activity across central Canada
is moving generally westward and being incorporated into the expansive
layer over northern Alberta and southwestern Northwest Territory. From
there, smoke is generally moving eastward to the Davis Strait. As for
smoke over the north-central CONUS that has its origins in the Four
Corners wildfire activity, that smoke is moving east-northeastward and
merging with the northern stream of smoke over Labrador. Some smoke is
being drawn southward off Newfoundland thanks to a cyclone just southeast
of the entrance to Davis Strait. Other smoke is being further drawn out
towards Iceland and the British Isles.

Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
Some light to perhaps moderate density smoke was seen across the
mountainous terrain of southern/southwestern Mexico and offshore over
the tropical Eastern Pacific.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
