DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z March 28, 2026

SMOKE:
Midwest/Mississippi Valley...
Agricultural burning from far southern Wisconsin to far northern Arkansas
was observed producing mainly light smoke early this morning. The
greatest density of smoke production was observed across eastern Iowa,
where smoke was moving northeastward to north-northeastward. Smoke from
burns in the Ozarks and Mississippi were observed moving southwestward
to west-southwestward.

Florida...
Agricultural burning across South Florida was observed producing light
smoke that was generally moving off to the south.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S./Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of America/Mexico/Tropical Eastern
Pacific...
A large area of vary light to light remnant smoke was seen across the
central CONUS, Gulf Coast, northern Gulf of America, Florida, and off the
Carolina Coast. A frontal boundary was acting to concentrate the smoke
across these areas. Some smoke was also seen across the Gulf Coast of
Mexico, with flow concentrating smoke where smoke is unable to make it
up terrain. There is also some of this layer that extends to the Isthmus
and Gulf of Tehuantepec and out over the Tropical Eastern Pacific, where
some has also moved over the southern Pacific Coast of Mexico. Some of
the layer may be composed of industrial aerosol, especially over portions
of southern Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
