DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z October 12, 2025

SMOKE:
Mississippi Valley:
An area of light density smoke was observed this evening in the Lower
Mississippi Valley. Many agricultural fires in Louisiana, Arkansas, and
southeastern Missouri produced lightly dense smoke that extended east
through Mississippi into Alabama and the Florida panhandle as well as
south towards the Gulf of America. The smoke may also consist of smoke
remnants from yesterday’s agricultural fires in the region.

Northern California:
Fires in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California were observed
producing light density smoke that drifted northeast across the mountain
range before being obscured by clouds.

Central British Columbia:
Individual fires in the Canadian Cascades produced a localized area of
light density smoke within the mountain range.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Northeastern, Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of America...
An area of light-to-moderate smoke and aerosols, attributed to widespread
seasonal fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources,
was observed this evening in the Bay of Campeche, southeastern Mexico,
and northwestern Guatemala, extending as far south as the Pacific Coast
of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
