DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z October 3, 2025

SMOKE:
Northern Canada…
Despite moderate cloud cover in northern Canada, an area of light-density
smoke was visible moving east from fires in the southern Northwest
Territories and northern Alberta. This smoke extended into southwestern
Nunavut and northern Saskatchewan.

Central and Southeastern Washington State…
Wildfires continued to burn in central Washington. While heavy density
smoke concentrated around the fire sources, light-to-moderate density
smoke drifted east. Fires in southeastern Washington produced an area
of light-to-moderate smoke, which was observed merging with the smoke
moving from central Washington toward the eastern part of the state and
western Idaho.

Mississippi Valley/Southeastern United States/Gulf of America…
Agricultural burning across the Mississippi Valley and the Southeastern
United States produced smaller, individual smoke plumes this evening. The
majority of these plumes were concentrated in eastern Arkansas and
northeastern Louisiana and was observed moving towards the west.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
