DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 30, 2025

SMOKE:
Northwest Territories/Central Canada/Southeastern CONUS…
Wildfire activity continues to be analyzed across the southern Northwest
Territories, northern Alberta, west-central Saskatchewan, and southern
Manitoba. Some cloud cover was present across much of the Pacific
Northwest and Canada, which obscured some of the smoke produced from the
fires. However, moderate smoke produced from the fires in west-central
Saskatchewan remained visible, as the smoke moved northeast towards the
southern Northwest Territories. Light smoke from the fires in northern
Alberta and southern Northwest Territories produced light smoke, which
moved east towards southern Manitoba and Ontario and southeast towards
the Atlantic Ocean. Additional light smoke moved south, blanketing the
eastern Midwest and Southwest CONUS, and the western Southeast CONUS
before reaching Mexico. Widespread agricultural burning continued this
morning across the southeastern CONUS, which could have also contributed
to the smoke observed in this area.

Washington State…
Wildfires continued in Washington State, with the fire in Chelan County
producing moderate-to-heavy smoke, while the fire in Yakima County
produced light-to-moderate smoke. Additional light smoke from the fires
moved north towards southern British Columbia, merging with the smoke
produced by the Canadian fires.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
