DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z September 24, 2025

SMOKE:
Northwest Territories/Central Canada/Southeastern United States…
Wildfires continued throughout central Canada this evening, with the
heaviest smoke produced by the wildfires in central Alberta, northeastern
Alberta, and the southern Northwest Territories. Moderate-to-heavy
smoke from these wildfires moved towards the east, thinning to light
smoke as it drifted across Nunavut and northern Manitoba. The light
smoke continued to spread south towards the Midwestern United States
where it became obscured by clouds. It appeared to have drifted south
over the Southeastern United States and into the northern Gulf of America.

West Coast United States…
Wildfires continued in Washington State, with those in Chelan County and
Kittitas County producing moderate-to-heavy smoke that traveled east over
the mountain valleys, thinning to light smoke and dispersing north into
British Columbia. Moderate density smoke produced by the wildfire in the
Olympic National Forest was also observed thinning to light smoke as it
drifted east over Seattle. Finally, a wildfire in southwestern Oregon
was seen producing moderate-to-heavy smoke that remained concentrated
near the fire source. Light smoke continued to spread southwest towards
the northern California Coast and the Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
