DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z September 16, 2025

SMOKE:
Western Canada/Midwestern and Southeastern CONUS….
The combination of continued wildfires over western Canada, although
to much a lesser extent than what was seen a few weeks back. The
light-to-moderate smoke remnants produced the western Canadian wildfires
extended across southern Saskatchewan, Ontario, southern Quebec, and
the northern portion of the United States and into the North Atlantic
Ocean. A portion of that area of smoke was also drawn southeast into the
Midwestern and Southeastern United States and also extending offshore
over the Northern Gulf of America. Within this large area of smoke, a few
areas of moderate density smoke were seen over portions of northeastern
Montana extending east over North Dakota and also from Nova Scotia
extending east into the North Atlantic Ocean.

Pacific Northwest…
Multiple wildfires were also observed in the Pacific Northwest, mainly
in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State and southern British
Columbia, producing light-to-heavy smoke plumes traveling in the northern
direction. Heavy smoke from the wildfire in the Olympic Peninsula remains
concentrated near the source while the light-to-moderate smoke extends
over the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

Central California…
The wildfire in central California continued to produce a localized
light-to-moderate smoke plume that was concentrated near the fire source.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
