DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z September 9, 2025

SMOKE:
Western Canada/Pacific Northwest...
Wildfires persisted throughout western Canada and the northwestern
United States.
Localized heavy density smoke was seen in west-central Saskatchewan and
southern British Columbia. Moderate smoke was observed this evening moving
east from British Columbia and south from the Northwest Territories into
Alberta, western Saskatchewan, and Northwestern United States. Lighter
density smoke extends further out into southern Saskatchewan, southern
Manitoba, Ontario, and the Midwestern United States, continuing eastward
into the Northeastern United States, Quebec, and Newfoundland. Additional
light smoke from previous day agricultural burning across the Mississippi
Valley and Southeastern United States was seen merging with the light
smoke from the Canadian wildfires.

California…
The Garnet fire in California remained active this evening. This fire
produced a light-to-moderate density smoke plume which was seen dispersing
north towards Nevada. The lighter density smoke continued to travel north
until it merged with the smoke drifting east from the Canadian wildfires.

DUST:
Caribbean…
Light dust from the Sahara Desert was observed moving west towards the
Lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
