DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z September 5, 2025

SMOKE:
Western Canada/Northwestern & Southwestern CONUS...
Wildfires continued to burn across western Canada and the northwestern
United States. Heavy smoke was observed this evening stretching
southeastward from Central British Columbia into Washington and Idaho,
with a second pocket located in the Central Northwest Territories. Areas
of moderate smoke extended outward from the heavy plumes covering a large
portion of the Northwest Territories, the entirety of British Columbia,
Washington and Idaho, and Southern Wyoming. Lighter smoke extended over
Southeastern Yukon, Western Alberta, Eastern Oregon, Western Montana, and
Southern Nebraska, while also dispersing eastward over the Ohio Valley
and finally reaching the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and New England. Areas east
of the Mississippi Valley showed moderate-to-heavy smoke concentration
due to accumulation of smoke from agricultural burning across the region
and the larger smoke plume originating from the Canadian wildfires. The
thickest smoke was seen over the Mid-Atlantic and New England, and was
moving off to the east.

Southern Gulf of America...
An area consisting of light smoke likely associated with gas flaring
activity in the Bay of Campeche and neighboring areas inland, mixed with
agricultural fire emissions in Central Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula
could be seen over the Southern Gulf of America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
