DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z August 29, 2025

SMOKE:
Western and Central Canada...
Wildfires continued in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia,
northwest Alberta, and northern Saskatchewan. Heavy smoke covered much
of the Northwest Territories and northern Alberta and Saskatchewan,
while moderate smoke was observed in the Yukon and BC. The smoke drifted
north and mainly east, spreading into Nunavut, Manitoba and thinning as
it continued expanding northeast into the Arctic and south towards the
Great Lakes region.

Western United States...
Wildfires in California and Oregon were producing plumes of
moderate-to-heavy smoke which spread mainly north and circulated
east, covering Washington, Idaho and Nevada. There was some light
density smoke spread offshore near Santa Barbara from fires in Southern
California. Smoke from the western states expanded and merged with smoke
from Canada, creating a large area of light coverage across the Pacific
coast, the Rocky Mountains, and Canada.

Midwestern United States/Mid-Atlantic…
Light smoke moved south over Minnesota and Wisconsin from Canada, curving
to the east south of the Great Lakes. Proscribed fires throughout the
Mississippi Valley contributed to the smoke spread as it continued east
towards the Mid-Atlantic states and moved offshore.

DUST:
Saharan Dust was observed east of the Caribbean and lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
