DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2340Z August 27, 2025

SMOKE:
Central-Northern Canada...
Wildfires in the Northwest Territories continued to burn this evening,
emitting moderate-to-heavy density smoke which spread over the eastern
half of that Province, while light-to-moderate density smoke extended
to the south over northeastern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, southeast
to Manitoba and western Ontario, and east over northeastern Nunavut.

Central-Southern US...
An area of stagnant smoke from previous day agricultural fires across
the Central and Southeastern US remains visible as it extends from
Oklahoma to Northern Florida, including the southern Mississippi Valley
and the northern Gulf of America, and then travels northeast along the
Atlantic Coast.

Western CONUS...
Pockets of moderate-to-heavy density smoke from the Dillon Fire in
Siskiyou County/Northern California and the Emigrant Fire in Lane
County/Central Oregon could be seen near those sources. Light-to-heavy
density smoke was also observed from the wildfire in central California
as it persists northeast towards southern Nevada.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
