DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2340Z August 26, 2025

SMOKE:
Northern Canada...
Wildfires in the Northwest Territories continued to emit light-to-heavy
density smoke with light-to-moderate density extending southeastward
over Northern Alberta, Northern Saskatchewan, Central Manitoba, and
western Ontario. The highest density smoke were concentrated in the
south-central and southeastern portion of the Northwest Territories as
well as northeastern Saskatchewan.

Central and Southeastern CONUS/Atlantic Coast...
Remnant smoke from previous day agricultural fires across the Central
and Southeastern US could be seen extending southeastward from Oklahoma
to Eastern Texas, the Southern Mississippi Valley, the Northern Gulf of
America, the Carolinas, and over the Atlantic Coast.

Western CONUS...
Light-to-heavy density smoke was observed near wildfires in Northern
California, Southwestern Oregon, Northern Idaho, and the Olympic Peninsula
of Washington State, with most plumes being largely stagnant around those
areas. Light-to-moderate density smoke from the wildlife in Southwestern
Oregon was seen extending west towards the Pacific Coast and southeast
towards Northeastern California and Northwestern Nevada.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
