DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z August 24, 2025
SMOKE: Northern Canada... Wildfires in the Northwest Territories continued to emit moderate density smoke which spread to a light layer of smoke from western Northwest Territories to Nunavut and the Arctic. Nova Scotia... A large, dense plume of smoke was observed billowing from the Long Lake Wildfire in western Nova Scotia. The plume spread to the northeast into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Western United States/Southeastern United States... Wildfires in the western United States continued to release moderate-to-thick plumes of smoke, with the heaviest smoke observed in central California, central Oregon, the Olympic Peninsula, central Idaho and western Montana. The smoke spread into a light layer which covered the west coast to the south and circulated to the east from Washington into Montana and Wyoming. The smoke thinned and drifted across the central United States and into the southeast, where proscribed burns contributed to the layer of smoke as it continued northeast along Appalachia before turning to the east and moving offshore just north of the Nova Scotia plume. DUST: Saharan Dust was seen observed circulating in the eastern Caribbean and central Atlantic, moving to the northeast over Puerto Rico. Mills THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG:http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
