DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z August 23, 2025

SMOKE:
Canada...
Wildfires remained active in central and southern Northwest
Territories, producing moderate to heavy density smoke closer to the
source and light density smoke covered much of northern Canada and
extended east towards Nunavut.

Nova Scotia…
The Long Lake Wildfire in eastern Nova Scotia was actively producing
moderate to heavy density smoke plume which emitted towards the NE
remaining mostly within Nova Scotia.

Western CONUS/Central CONUS/South Central Canada...
Wildfires in the western United States remained active, including the Flat
fire in central Oregon, the Pickett Fire in northern California, northern
Nevada, central Idaho, western Montana, western Wyoming and western
Colorado. Smoke with the heaviest density were concentrated in central
Idaho and western
Colorado. Mostly light to moderate density smoke in this area dispersed
east, dips southeast near the Central Plains, continued moving NE towards
the Great Lakes, and making its way south over the Mississippi Valley
and southeast Texas.

Lower Mississippi Valley…
Various agricultural fires were seen throughout the lower portion of the
Mississippi Valley. The light density smoke plumes seen emitting from
these fires were moving south eventually mixing with the smoke from the
wildfires coming from the western CONUS.

Blowing Dust…
Blowing dust was seen in the Southwest CONUS, specifically in Arizona
and southern California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
