DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z August 23, 2025

SMOKE:

Wildfires in the Northwest Territories continued to generate a large area
of light to moderately dense smoke seen in satellite over much of the
central/eastern sections of the Northwest Territories, much of Nunavut,
northern/central Alberta and Saskatchewan. Cloud cover does obscure the
view over parts of Manitoba, southeastern sections of Nunavut and the
Hudson Bay region where there could be additional smoke.

Northwest US, Rocky Mountains, Central US, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes
Region, Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Vallies, and into northern
Mid-Atlantic...
Wildfires continued in northern Nevada, Idaho, western Montana and Wyoming
which generated a large area of light smoke that extended from parts of
central/eastern Washington and Oregon, into Idaho and eastward to the
Great Lakes region. Then, residual smoke can be seen from eastern New
Mexico, into Texas, the Mississippi Valley, northeast into Kentucky,
West Virginia, northwest Virginia, western Maryland and into western
Pennsylvania. Thicker density smoke plumes were seen moving east from
the fires in Idaho and Montana.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
