DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0110Z August 22, 2025

SMOKE:
Canada...
Wildfires remained active in the central and southern Northwest
Territories, producing light to heavy density smoke that covered much
of northern Canada and extended east towards Nunavut.

Western CONUS/Central CONUS/South Central Canada...
Wildfires in the western United States remained active, including
those in northern Nevada, central Idaho, western Montana, and western
Colorado. Mostly light to moderate density smoke was observed near the
fires. Smoke with the heaviest density were concentrated in central
Idaho and western Colorado. Light-to-moderate density smoke dispersed
northeast into south-central Canada.

Central Plains...
A great amount of agricultural fires in central and southern Kansas and
north-central Oklahoma were observed producing light to locally moderate
density smoke drifting to the southwest.

Florida...
The large Mile Marker 39 wildfire in the Francis S. Taylor Wildlife
Management Area within the Everglades was observed producing mostly
light smoke with a smaller moderate-to-heavy density center drifting
east across the Atlantic Ocean and towards The Bahamas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
