DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1510Z August 19, 2025

SMOKE:
Northwest Territories….
Wildfire activity over the southern Northwest Territories was producing
an area of light to moderate density smoke that was seen covering much
of the Northwest Territories and extending north into the Arctic Circle.

Central and Eastern United States, South Central Canada, Northern Gulf
of America and the Atlantic Ocean...
A large area of mostly light density smoke, from wildfire activity over
the western United States, was seen over much of the central and eastern
United States, the northern Gulf of America, south central Canada and
extended into the North Atlantic Ocean. Within this region, an area of
moderate density, with localized high density, smoke was seen closer to
the ongoing wildfires. The highest density smoke was seen over portions
of western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming and then also from northwestern
Wyoming, south central Montana and portions of central and eastern Idaho
extending southwest into northern Nevada.

North Atlantic Ocean and Western Europe….
An area of light density smoke that is believed to be from the Canadian
wildfires was seen over the North Atlantic Ocean and extending into
western Europe.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
