DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z August 11, 2025

SMOKE:
Canada/Atlantic Ocean/CONUS...
Wildfires in northwestern and central Canada continued to produce dense
smoke plumes that blanketed most of North America, drifting east to the
Atlantic Ocean and over the Midwestern United States. Moderate-to-heavy
density smoke was concentrated over Manitoba and eastern Ontario,
spreading south into the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and
Michigan. Moderate-to-heavy density smoke was also seen over the
Northeastern United States, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador,
Nova Scotia, and North Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, the wildfire observed
producing a smoke plume in Newfoundland merged with the light-to-heavy
density smoke over the north Atlantic Ocean as it circulates towards
the east.

California/Colorado/Southwestern CONUS...
Wildfires in southwestern CONUS remained active, including the Gifford
Fire in southern California; the Monroe Canyon Fire in central Utah; the
Dragon Bravo Fire in northern Arizona; The Billy, Bronco, and Indian Creek
Fires in southeastern Arizona; the Lee Fire in northwestern Colorado;
and the Stoner Mesa Fire in southwestern Colorado. Light-to-heavy smoke
were produced by these wildfires with moderate-heavy concentrated near
the fires. Light density smoke from most of these fires merged together
with the smoke produced by the Canadian wildfires with the weather system.

DUST:
Caribbean...
Light-to-moderate dust from the Saharan Desert was observed moving
westward across the Lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
