DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1550Z August 8, 2025

SMOKE:
North America and the North Atlantic Ocean….
The combination of a large number of wildfires over central Canada and,
to a much lesser extent, over portions of the southwestern United States
was producing an exceptional area of smoke that covered most of North
America including much of central and eastern Canada and also the central
and eastern United States. The smoke extended through the North Atlantic
Ocean and extended as far east as western Europe. Within this large
area of smoke several areas were featuring very high density smoke.
Those being, over portions of southeastern Canada extending into the
North Atlantic Ocean and also closer to the exceptional fire activity
ongoing over portions of northern Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba.
Moderate density smoke was also seen over portions of the Northeastern and
Midwestern United States. Further to the south, the fire activity over
Arizona and southern California was also producing areas of moderate
density smoke over southern portions of Texas and also over several
sections of the Southwestern United States.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
