DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z July 25, 2025

SMOKE:
Central Canada...
Wildfires continued to burn in the Northwest Territories, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and generated a large area of light
smoke which covered most of the northern continent from Alaska to the
Atlantic. Large plumes and thicker density smoke concentrated in the
southern Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and drifted east
over Ontario, southern Quebec, and Newfoundland.

Western United States...
Fires in eastern Washington, northwestern Oregon, central Idaho and
northern California produced moderate density plumes which drifted
northeast. Larger fires in Utah and northern Arizona generated thick
smoke which spread to the east into a large area of moderate smoke across
Colorado and Wyoming, and merged with the smoke from Canada moving toward
the Atlantic and Greenland.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
