DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z July 12, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/North-Central United States/Atlantic Ocean...
Wildfires continued to burn across Northwestern Alaska, Northwestern
and Central Canada with widespread smoke covering Northern Alaska, large
parts of Northwestern and Central Canada, the North-Central United States,
and portions North Atlantic Ocean. Areas of higher smoke concentration
are found moving northeastward along Central Saskatchewan and Manitoba,
Western Ontario, over the Hudson Bay, and eventually reaching
Greenland/Mid-Atlantic Ocean. The medium to heavy smoke also made its
way south into Central CONUS this morning and early afternoon.

California/Nevada/Utah/Arizona/New Mexico/Colorado...
The large Mount Irish Fire in southern Nevada remained active this morning
with smoke being dispersed towards the east into Utah. Several other large
wildfires in southwestern Utah, north-central Arizona, northern and
southwestern New Mexico, and west-central Colorado were also observed
producing locally moderate to heavy density smoke drafting southeast
and then turning northeast. Lighter density smoke was extending further
and merging with smoke from the Canadian fires. Additional wildfires
in Northern California were also seen producing moderate to heavy smoke
near the sources with a lighter density plume extending south and east.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
