DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1510Z March 22, 2025

SMOKE:
Southeastern CONUS...
Widespread agricultural burning from east Texas and eastern Oklahoma to
the Carolinas and Florida was observed producing numerous light density
smoke plumes. Smoke was generally moving east towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Chihuahua...
Across the Mexican State of Chihuahua, multiple fires were observed
producing light to moderate density smoke plumes that was observed moving
east to east-northeastward.

Cuba...
Thin smoke from agricultural and prescribed burning across Cuba was
observed mainly moving south-southwestward then west-southwestward
towards the Caribbean.

AEROSOL/SMOKE/DUST:
Central and Southern Mexico/Western and Southern Gulf of America/Pacific
Ocean...
An area of mainly light density smoke, aerosol, and blowing dust was seen
moving northeastern across Central Mexico into the Gulf of America. In
addition, smoke was also observed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast
of southwest Mexico. Cloud cover obscured further smoke analysis over
central Mexico and the Gulf of America.

BLOWING DUST:
Northern Mexico/Southwestern CONUS…
A couple areas of blowing dust were observed across southeastern Arizona,
northeastern Sonora, northern Chihuahua, southern New Mexico, and far
western Texas. The dust was mainly light and moving east-northeastward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
