DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1450Z March 20, 2025

SMOKE:
Florida...
Numerous agricultural fires were observed emitting light-to-medium
density south of Lake Okeechobee, in addition to a wildfire burning in
the Southern Glades Wildlife area resulting in a larger area of light
smoke that covered most of Southern Florida.

Cuba...
Multiple fires were actively burning across Cuba this morning with
light-to-moderate smoke plumes dispersing towards the west. An area
of light remnant smoke also covered the western part of the island,
extending further south over the Caribbean Sea and west over the Gulf
of America for approximately 200 miles in each direction.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Eastern, Central and Southern Mexico/Western and Southern Gulf of
Mexico/Pacific Ocean
An area of light density smoke and aerosols attributed to scattered
burning, volcanic emissions, and industrial activity throughout Central
and Southern Mexico was observed extending along Eastern, Central and
Southern Mexico, Western and Central Gulf of America, and extending
to the south over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Guerrero, Oaxaca,
and Chiapas in Southern Mexico.

DUST:
Southern Texas/Northeastern Mexico/Central-Western Gulf of America...
Light to moderate intensity dust lifted by strong winds observed
across northern Mexico and Texas yesterday is seen dispersing towards
the southeast across Southeastern Texas and Northeastern Mexico, and
extending over most of Central and Western Gulf of America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
