DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0005Z March 15, 2025

SMOKE:
Great Plains/Texas/Oklahoma...
Several large, newly ignited and fast moving wildfires were
observed across the Great Plains region this afternoon and into the
evening. Wind-fueled fires located in northern Texas, northeastern and
central Oklahoma were seen producing large plumes of moderate to thick
smoke that were blowing northeast across their respective states while
mixing with blowing dust present in the area before continuing north
into Kansas.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Western Gulf of America/Bay
of Campeche...
An area of predominantly light density smoke and aerosols, attributed
to scattered agricultural burning, volcanic emissions, and industrial
sources throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed this evening
along the southwestern coast of Mexico near northern Central America. It
was then seen extending west into the Pacific Ocean and east into the
western Gulf of America and the Bay of Campeche.

DUST:
Great Plains...
A significant amount of blowing dust was observed this evening originating
from dry lands in eastern New Mexico, northern Mexico and western Texas
with the resulting dust cloud covering an expansive area from west and
central Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southeastern Nebraska, and western
Missouri. As the evening progressed, the dust cloud was seen continuing
northeast in direction towards Nebraska and Iowa.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
