DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0008Z February 23, 2025

SMOKE:
Central & Southeastern United States...
Seasonal burning was seen throughout the central and southeastern United
States. Several light to moderate density smoke plumes were observed
in southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle. All the smoke plumes in
the central United States were moving generally to the north while the
smoke plumes in the southeastern United States were more moderate smoke
that was moving generally to the south.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
Despite significant cloud cover in the region, an area of predominantly
light density smoke and aerosols attributed to scattered agricultural
burning, volcanic emissions and industrial sources throughout Central
and Southern Mexico along the southwestern coast of Mexico near northern
Central America where it was then seen extending further west into the
Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
