DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0126Z February 10, 2025

SMOKE:
South-Central/Southeastern United States...
In the south-Central and southeastern United States agricultural burning
was detected through some cloud cover. This created an area of smoke over
southern Louisiana and the southeastern United States were it extends
from Alabama to the northeast through to North Carolina where it goes
off the Atlantic coast combining with remnant smoke.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of
Campeche/Cuba/Southern Texas...
A large area of predominantly light density smoke and aerosols attributed
to scattered agricultural burning, industrial sources and volcanic
emissions throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed today
along the west coast of Mexico just south of the Baja Peninsula and
into the Pacific Ocean near the southern tip of Mexico and northern
Central America. This area of light density smoke and aerosols continued
expanding east through Southern Mexico and into the southwestern portion
of the Gulf of Mexico near the Bay of Campeche, then continued north
towards the southern tip of Texas. Seasonal burning was seen through
all of Cuba creating mostly light density smoke moving southwest over
the Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
