DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z January 7, 2025

SMOKE:
Arizona...
A plume of light to moderate density smoke from a wildfire located in
central Arizona was seen blowing southwest in direction across the state
this morning before being obscured by cloud cover.

No other areas of significant smoke were observed this morning due
to limited fire activity and widespread cloud cover across the HMS
geographic domain.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche...
An area of predominantly light density smoke and aerosols attributed to
scattered agricultural burning, volcanic emissions and industrial sources
throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed this morning extending
west into the Pacific Ocean from Mexico’s Southern Pacific coast,
through the southeastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico and past Southern
Florida towards the Atlantic Ocean. Heavy cloud cover over Central Mexico,
the Bay of Campeche and the majority of the Gulf of Mexico prevented a
more detailed analysis of smoke and aerosols present in these regions,
however, based on previous observations it can be presumed that they
are present in these areas but are shielded by cloud cover.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
