Topic:
AVHRR Visible Coefficient Update for Month of May
Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
13 May 2003, 2245 UTC
Satellite(s) Involved:
NOAA-16
Instrument(s) Involved:
AVHRR
Product(s) Involved/Affected:
All products for channels 1 and 2
Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
13 May 2003, Time 1645 UTC
Details/Specifics of Change:
The NOAA-16 AVHRR Visual calibration update for the month of May 2003 was
performed beginning with the following orbits:
NSS.HRPT.NL.D03133.S2016.E2026.B1360505.MO
NSS.HRPT.NL.D03133.S2025.E2037.B1360505.GC
NSS.GHRR.NL.D03133.S1824.E2019.B1360305.GC
The calibration coefficients for NOAA-16 AVHRR Channel 1 & 2 were updated
FROM
Ch_1_lo = .0523*count - 2.016
Ch_1_hi = .1528*count - 51.91
Ch_2_lo = .0513*count - 1.943
Ch_2_hi = .1510*count - 51.77
TO
Ch_1_lo = .0527*count - 2.033
Ch_1_hi = .1540*count - 52.33
Ch_2_lo = .0565*count - 2.141
Ch_2_hi = .1664*count - 57.04
The instrument scientist reported the following:
The "switch point" is not listed here because they are not subject to
change. The change for Channel 1 coefficients is small (less than 1%)
because they had a small positive bias after launch and this channel has
been degrading slower than normal. The change for Channel 2 coefficients is
large (about 10%) because they had a moderate negative bias after launch,
this channel has been degrading as usual, and we could not correct for the
bias and drift until now. We intend to update these coefficients monthly
from now on and the subsequent update should be incremental in nature.
Additional information can be provided if needed.
