Topic:
Plans to Examine APT transmitter effect on HIRS instrument
Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
16 April 2007, 2110 UTC
Satellite(s) Involved:
NOAA-18
Instrument(s) Involved:
HIRS, APT
Product(s) Involved/Affected:
loss of data
Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
TBD, once instrument noise is quiet
Details/Specifics of Change:
NOAA's Satellite Operations Control Center (SOCC) has received approval to proceed to test the effect if any of the APT transmitter on the HIRS instrument noise. This test must be conducted when the instrument noise level is quiet. SOCC will monitor the instrument for the next opportunity to conduct this test. The APT and HIRS user community will be impacted by this test as described below. As soon a a definite date is set for the test a notice with details will be sent out to the user community. The following web site contains an up-to-date chart of the current status of the instrument noise: http://www.orbit.nesdis.noaa.gov/smcd/spb/multisensor/hirs/
According to SOCC, "The instrument will be placed in space view for two orbits in order to provide a uniform background and then we will systematically turn-on/off the various transmitters and monitor the noise looking for any noise spikes. We want to conduct the test when the instrument, both Long Wave and Short Wave channels, are in a quiet mode i.e. when the loose lens are not creating noise. When the instrument becomes quiet, SOCC will put the command sequence into the daily schedule. If possible, you will receive notice that SOCC has scheduled the test approximately 24-hours prior to the test being conducted. After the command sequence has been run, the instrument will be returned to full-scan mode."
