Update #2: ABI and GLM data resumed at 17:30 UTC, CCOR data resumed at 17:45 UTC
Update #1: This is a reminder that the GOES-19 Yaw Flip maneuver is on schedule to occur today starting at 1630 UTC. The impacts of this activity are provided in the details section below.
Topic: GOES-19 Yaw Flip Maneuver Scheduled for March 19, 2026
Date/Time Issued: March 19, 2026 1802Z
Product(s) or Data Impacted: All GOES-19 Products
Date/Time of Initial Impact: March 19, 2026 1630 UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: March 19, 2026 1720 UTC
Length of Outage: 50 minutes
Details/Specifics of Change:
A yaw flip maneuver from the upright to inverted orientation will be performed for GOES-19 on March 19, 2026 from 1630 - 1720 UTC. During this period all instruments will experience a data outage, as detailed below. After the maneuver, all instruments and products will resume production and distribution.
Approximate outage times per instrument:
ABI Outage: 50 minutes (1630 UTC to 1720 UTC)
GLM Outage: 50 minutes (1630 UTC to 1720 UTC)
SUVI Outage: 50 minutes (1630 UTC to 1720 UTC)
EXIS Outage (validity flag set to "off-point”): 50 minutes (1630 UTC to 1720 UTC)
SEISS Outage: 30 minutes (1640 UTC to 1710 UTC)
MAG Outage: 30 minutes (1640 UTC to 1710 UTC)
CCOR Outage: 50 minutes (1630 UTC to 1720 UTC)
Following the yaw flip, all ABI channels will experience navigation and product quality degradation for up to 30 minutes after the outage due to the Kalman filter reset. Small navigation errors in GLM events may occur and diminish over the course of a week.
Additionally, customers using a linear-polarized receiver for High-Rate Information Transmission / Emergency Managers Weather Information Network (HRIT / EMWIN) or Data Collection Platform Report (DCPR) will notice a temporary loss of the data feed during the yaw flip. As the GOES-19 satellite nears its inverted orientation, the signal is expected to normalize and return.
Please note: The yaw flip will be postponed in the event of a critical weather day. It will slip one business day, remaining at the same time of day, until it does not conflict with a critical weather day.
