Topic: DSCOVR Data Storage Map Reload

Date/Time Issued: November 25, 2024 1711Z

Product(s) or Data Impacted: DSCOVR Instruments

Date/Time of Initial Impact:  December 2 2024 1155Z

Date/Time of Expected End:  December 2 2024 2030Z

Length of Outage: Instrument outage varies, see detail outage below

Details/Specifics:

DSCOVR is experiencing Data Storage corruption. The spacecraft is stable but to prevent the corruption from becoming worse, a processor reset will be performed. To ensure contact availability, the reset will occur following a planned momentum unloading maneuver. This will cause instrument outages during the time of the reset. The primary customer, NOAA/NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), will switch over to ACE as primary source during the DSCOVR Commanded Reset activities. Updated exact outage times will be sent out once the reset has been completed.

Estimated outage for DSCOVR instruments

Magnetometer - 2 hours, 45 minutes
Faraday Cup - 5 hours
ESA -  5 hours, 15 minutes
EPIC - 8 hours, 15 minutes (tentatively more if imaging is stopped the night before)
NISTAR - 56 hours (TBD due to a three part recovery that spans several days)
