Topic: Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core outages due to altitude raising
Date/Time Issued: November 2, 2023 1733 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GPM Microwave Imager (GMI), and Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) data products
Date/Time of Initial Impact: November 7, 2023
Date/Time of Expected End: January 1, 2024
Length of Outage: Up to 60 days for GPM DPR data
Details/Specifics of Change: The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory satellite will undergo altitude raising during the period of November 7 - 8, 2023. The altitude will increase from the current 405 km to 435 km in order to extend mission life. The GPM Core mission includes two primary instruments, the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) and Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). This activity will have impacts on data products from both of these instruments.
A complete outage of the DPR near real-time radar and combined products will occur from the start of the altitude raising on November 7, 2023 until late December or early January 2024. During this nearly 2-month period of time, changes to the algorithm allowing for proper handling of the altitude adjustment will be made by the NASA GPM team.
GMI data will continue to be produced during the 2 days of altitude raising however some degradation is possible due to the increasing footprint and incidence angle during the altitude adjustment. The GMI data will return to normal quality by November 9, 2023. Products that will be impacted by any degradation to the GMI data include MIRS, Blended Hydro, GPM BUFR, AutoSnow, GMASI Daily Snow and Ice, ADT, and eTRaP.
