Update #1: The implementation of the PR.12.04.00 software build that was originally scheduled for today will now take place on July 10, 2023
Topic: GOES-16 and GOES-18 software build (PR.12.04.00) implementation
Date/Time Issued: July 5, 2023 1512 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16/18 ABI L2+ Cloud Cover Layers, Cloud Mask, Cloud Top Height, and Ice Concentration and Extent
Date/Time of Initial Impact: July 10, 2023
Date/Time of Expected End: N/A
Length of Outage: N/A
Details/Specifics of Change: On or about July 5, 2023, the PR.12.04.00 software build will be placed into data operations for both GOES-16 and GOES-18. PR.12.04.00 contains significant changes to the Cloud Cover Layers product, and some minor metadata changes for other ABI L2+ products. The details of the changes are as follows:
Cloud Cover Layers
Change the Cloud Fraction Packed (CFP) variable that outputs the cloud fraction in 5 predefined flight layers from a 3-dimensional dataset to 5 separate 2-dimensional variables. The new variables will contain information in the long_name attribute denoting the vertical extent of the layer. (e.g CFP1:long_name = “cloud fraction between the surface and 5000 feet above sea level”).
Update to resolve missing blocks in CCL through improved filtering of input data
Resolve problems with CF conventions:
Variable “TCF” will have the standard_name “cloud_area_fraction” added
The “NumFlt_Layers” dimension will be removed given the change to split CFP into 5 separate variables, one for each flight layer.
Variable “CFP[1-5]” will have the standard_name “cloud_area_fraction_in_atmospheric_layer”
Cloud Top Height
Add error checking to the ancillary emissivity data used by the Cloud Height algorithm
Ice Concentration and Extent
Metadata change to add the cloud height shadow flag dataset to the algorithm_dynamic_input_data_container
Cloud Mask
Address typo in the algorithm_dynamic_input_data_container where the word “ancillary” was used twice (i.e “ancillary_ancillary”)
