Topic: Declaring VIIRS Ice Concentration, Ice Thickness/Age, Snow Cover, VPW and MiRS Products Operational in NCCF
Date/Time Issued: May 24, 2023 1945 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted:
SNPP/NOAA-20 VIIRS Ice Concentration/Ice Thickness/Age, Snow Cover, VPW, MiRS
Date/Time of Initial Impact: June 27, 2023 TBD UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: June 27, 2023 TBD UTC
Length of Outage: N/A
Details/Specifics of Change:
The JPSS Risk Reduction (JRR or JPSSRR) Ice Concentration, Ice Thickness/Age, Fractional Snow Cover, VIIRS Polar Wind (VPW) and Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) products for SNPP and NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 (pre-beta and MiRS for beta) are being migrated from NDE on-prem to NESDIS Common Cloud Framework (NCCF). These SNPP and NOAA-20 products are planned to be declared operational in NCCF on June 27, 2023. Since NOAA-21 ice, snow and wind products will be pre-beta at that time, they will stay in PDA I&T (not distributed to PDA OPS). NOAA-21 MiRS products will be beta or provisional at that time, MiRS will be distributed to PDA OPS. The PDA short names and product file names will remain the same during this migration. The test products are available on PDA I&T now. Users can start subscribing to these data products from PDA I&T. The test data product short names are appended with “_TEST”.
Updated products included in this release are:
Operational product generation of JPSS RR Ice Concentration in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
No PDA shortname change
List of Scientific Changes:
The daily GCOM-W1 AMSR2 Sea Ice SH&NH products are added as optional inputs to the product retrieval process, which has improved the Ice Concentration product quality over the polar regions.
Operational product generation of JPSS RR Ice Thickness/Age in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
No PDA shortname change
List of Scientific Changes:
Added QC check for solar zenith angle between 85 and 93 degrees
Several parameters/constants are adjusted/updated
Science algorithm code version updated to v4.0
Operational product generation of JPSS RR Snow Cover in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
No PDA shortname change
List of Scientific Changes:
JPSS RR VIIRS Snow Cover products are now generated for daytime granules only. Total number of product files is reduced by about 50%.
Operational product generation of VIIRS_WINDS_NH in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
New Products
List of Scientific Changes: The VPW algorithm has been upgraded to the enterprise version. Also removes solar zenith cutoff for polar winds to address an issue where good quality winds targets were being filtered out.
Operational product generation of VIIRS_WINDS_SH in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
New Products
List of Scientific Changes: The VPW algorithm has been upgraded to the enterprise version. Also removes solar zenith cutoff for polar winds to address an issue where good quality winds targets were being filtered out.
Operational product generation of VIIRS_WINDS_NB_BUFR in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
No PDA shortname change
List of Scientific Changes: The Same as VIIRS_WINDS_NH and VIIRS_WINDS_SH.
Operational product generation of MiRS v11.9 in NCCF:
Impact on users: Yes
No PDA shortname change
List of Scientific Changes:
1.Updates to the snowfall rate (SFR) algorithm software including (1) Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) machine learning Snowfall Detection algorithms for JPSS-2/NOAA-21, NOAA-20, S-NPP, NOAA-19, Metop-C and Metop-B, (2) updated Neural Network machine learning Ice Water Path initialization and SFR bias correction for JPSS-2/NOAA-21, NOAA-20, S-NPP, NOAA-19, Metop-C and Metop-B, (3) new SFR low limit set at 0.05 mm/h and high limit at 6 mm/h, and (4) Metop-A processing removed.
2.Implementation of a new and up to date higher-resolution (0.05 degree lat/lon) land/water surface type database derived from global VIIRS data. The surface type at each satellite observation location also accounts for the satellite field of view (FOV) size. This replaces the previous and out of date 1/6th degree resolution database.
Please note: This upgrade will not be performed during Critical Weather Day (CWD).
