Topic: GOES-17 Data Outage and Degradation due to interleaving test May 11, 2022
Date/Time Issued: April 6, 2022 1401 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-17 (GOES-West) ABI, GLM, Space Weather
Date/Time of Initial Impact: May 11, 2022 1500 UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: May 11, 2022 1530 UTC
Length of Outage: 30 minutes
Details/Specifics of Change:
On May 11, 2022 at 1500 UTC, an interleave test will be performed on the GOES-17 (GOES-West) GRB feed. The purpose of this test is to exercise the interleaving configuration before GOES-18 drifts from Test (89.5 degrees West) to near-West (136.8 degrees West). The test entails routing GOES-18 preliminary non-operational ABI data through the GOES-17 GRB to operational GOES-West GRB users.
Due to the configuration of the Ground System, GOES-17 data distributed to GOES-West GRB and PDA users is subject to possible degradation or incorrect metadata because of the unique configuration. Even though GLM and Space Weather products will be from GOES-17, it is subject to possible degradation or incorrect metadata. The metadata which may be incorrect includes the global attribute “orbital_slot” and other location-related metadata. More information on global attributes is available in the Product User’s Guide (PUG).
GOES-West GRB & PDA data should not be used operationally during this time period. This shall be considered an outage of GOES-West operational data.
This test is subject to Critical Weather Day.
