Update #2: This is a reminder that the GOES-17 ABI FPM Setpoint Changes will start tomorrow, October 14, 2022 at 1300 UTC.

Update #1: The dates for the GOES-17 ABI FPM Setpoint Changes have been updated in the table below, and the new start date is October 14.

Topic: GOES-17 ABI FPM Setpoint Changes October 14-November 2, 2022

Date/Time Issued: October 13, 2022 1508 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-17 (GOES-West) ABI bands, Clear Sky Radiance, All Sky Radiance

Date/Time of Initial Impact: October 14, 2022 1300 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: November 2, 2022 1300 UTC

Length of Outage:  20 days

Details/Specifics of Change:

From October 14, 2022 1300 UTC through November 2, 2022 1300 UTC, the operational setpoint of  GOES-17 ABI will be adjusted to mitigate the impacts of the elevated focal plane module (FPM) temperatures on infrared imagery.  See the GOES-17 ABI Saturation Prediction Reference Tools for more background information:   https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Operations/GOES/documents/GOES-17%20ABI%20Saturated%20Prediction%20Reference%20Tools%20February%202022%20.pdf

The following table summarizes the set point adjustments throughout the August warm period (changes to setpoint are performed at 1300 UTC on the first day of a new setpoint):

Dates

Setpoint

October 14-19

92.8 K

October 20-30

90 K

October 31-November 1

87 K

November 2

84 K

Users should note that the Clear Sky Radiances and All Sky Radiances (CSR/ASR) product will not be produced when the setpoint is above 88 K

As the set point for ABI operating temperature is increased, the likelihood of larger striping artifacts increases. If the users do receive CSR/ASR products when the G17 ABI is operating at the higher set points, potentially an increased noise in CSR/ASR will be observed. In this case, users are advised to use at their own risk when the setpoint temperature is increased. Once again,  most likely, the CSR/ASR product will not be produced when the setpoint is above 88K

These set point changes will proceed despite any critical weather day declaration.
