Update # 3: On September 8, 2022, the GOES-17 and GOES-18 interleave will end at 16:01z. GOES-18 L1B (delivered via GRB and PDA users) and L2+ products (delivered via PDA users) will be out for approximately 6 hours beginning approximately 30 minutes after the end of interleave. GOES-18 KPP and non-ABI production and distribution will not be impacted.
Update #2: The date for the end of the GOES-WEST Operational Interleave of GOES-17 and GOES-18 has changed to September 8, 2022
Update #1: This is a reminder that the GOES-WEST Operational Interleave of GOES-17 and GOES-18 starts on Monday, August 1, 2022 at 1700 UTC
Topic: GOES-WEST Operational Interleave of GOES-17 and GOES-18 August 1, 2022 - September 8, 2022
Date/Time Issued: August 26 2022 1746 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-17 ABI L1b Radiances and L2 SCMI replaced with GOES-18 ABI L1b Radiances and L2 Cloud and Moisture Imagery
Date/Time of Initial Impact: August 1, 2022 at 1700 UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: September 8, 2022 at TBD Time
Length of Outage: N/A
Details/Specifics of Change:
On August 1, 2022 at 1700 UTC, the operational interleave of GOES-17 and GOES-18 will be implemented. At the time of the operational GOES-18 operational interleave, GOES-18 will be located in the West orbital slot (137.0 degrees West), 0.3 degrees from GOES-17 (at 137.3 degrees West).
The interleave configuration entails populating the operational GOES-17 GRB (GOES Rebroadcast) service with an “interleave” of GOES-18 ABI data (replacing the GOES-17 ABI data) and GOES-17 GLM and space weather data. See slide #9 here for the key to GRB Spacecraft IDs and Metadata: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Operations/GOES/documents/GOES-18%20T2O%20Schedule%2020220610.pdf
In order to ensure continuity of GOES-West ABI operations, GRB users are advised to ensure their end-processing will accept a different ABI platform ID (G18 rather than G17) and instrument ID (FM3 rather than FM2). More information on global attributes is available in the Product User’s Guide (PUG) Volume 4 for GRB: https://www.goes-r.gov/users/docs/PUG-GRB-vol4.pdf
The GOES-West data content of each product distribution service (e.g., GRB, AWIPS, PDA, CLASS, NODD, HRIT, GNC-A, etc.) during interleave period is listed on slide #8 here: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Operations/GOES/documents/GOES-18%20T2O%20Schedule%2020220610.pdf
Prior to the start of the interleave period, GOES-18 ABI L1b Radiances and L2 Cloud and Moisture Imagery will achieve Provisional maturity: fit for operational use and may be shared without restriction.
Note regarding GOES-17 ABI: GOES-17 ABI will be operating continuously until the GOES-West transition from GOES-17 to GOES-18 in January 2023. The GOES-17 ABI data will be available as it normally is through PDA subscriptions. Continuous GOES-17 ABI operations will include the Aug-Sep and Oct-Nov interleave periods when GOES-17 ABI will have multiple focal plane module temperature (FPM) mitigations including the cooling timeline and multiple FPM set points adjustments.
This interleave implementation will proceed regardless of Critical Weather Day declaration.
Additionally, due to the GOES-17/GOES-18 interleave configuration, there will be an ~ 6 hour outage (starting ~ 30 minutes after interleave ends at 16:01 UTC) in the distribution of GOES-18 ABI L1b data to GRB and PDA users and GOES-18 ABI L2+ data to PDA users. GOES-18 KPP and non-ABI production and distribution will not be impacted.
