Topic:  JPSS Algorithm Updates in IDPS Block 2.3 Maintenance Release Mx 1 Transition to Operations

Date/Time Issued:  March 30, 2021 1225 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: S-NPP/NOAA-20 VIIRS SDRs, OMPS SDRs - Improved VIIRS SDR Quality

Date/Time of Initial Impact: March 30, 2021 1510 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End:  March 30, 2021 TBD UTC

Length of Outage:  TBD

Details/Specifics of Change:

The next Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) Block 2.3 maintenance release Mx1 (IDPS Mx I2.3.01.00) is scheduled to transition to operations on March 30, 2021.

Algorithm Updates in IDPS Mx 1 release include:

Correct Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper Dark Count Correction The code change fixes a computation error in the dark count correction for S-NPP and NOAA-20 OMPS Nadir Mapper. SDR and EDR users will see no change because the correction has been made manually during fast track dark count table deliveries since the end of February 2020.

Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Thermal Emissive Band (TEB) Corrections During Moon Intrusions and After Sync Losses

VIIRS SDR TEB calibration algorithm has been updated to improve TEB SDR production during lunar intrusions into the VIIRS Space View (SV). TEB products are now generated when the moon is expected to be in the SV keep-out-box and are no longer replaced with the fill values. The products are still flagged as "poor quality" because of the limited availability of the SV data, but the onboard calibrator data are no longer flagged as missing. Additional calibration corrections were made for the dual-gain bands around the lunar intrusions as well as sync losses and sector rotations. No actions are required by users.
