EARLIER A SIGMET FROM GUAYAGUIL HAD INICATED AN ERUPTION OF GUAGUA PICHINCHA. THE GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE IN QUITO CONFIRMED THAT A 10 OR 15 MINUTE ERUPTION HAD OCCURRED STARTING AT 1127 UTC. THE INSTITUE INDICATED THAT THE VOLCANO WAS QUIET AT 1400 UTC. THE INSTITUTE FURTHER REPORTED THAT SUCH PHREATIC EXPLOSIONS HAVE BEEN OCCURRING FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.
