VOLCANIC ASH ADVISORY
ISSUED: 2001JUL05/1915Z VAAC: WASHINGTON
.
VOLCANO: TUNGURAHUA 1502-08
LOCATION: 0128S 7826W AREA: ECUADOR
.
SUMMIT ELEVATION: 16480 FT (5023 M)
.
ADVISORY NUMBER: 2001/94.
.
INFORMATION SOURCE: GUAYAQUIL METEOROLOGICAL WATCH OFFICE.
GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE. GOES-8 SATELLITE IMAGERY. UPPER AIR FORECAST
FROM THE AVIATION MODEL.
.
ERUPTION DETAILS: AIRCRAFT REPORT OF ASH AT 1810Z OVER VOLCANO.
.
DETAILS OF ASH CLOUD: THE LATEST SATELLITE IMAGERY IS SUGGESTING
THAT A RATHER SUBSTANTIAL ERUPTION HAS OCCURRED. A PILOT REPORT HAD
REPORTED ASH TO FL250...HOWEVER VISIBLE AND MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE
IMAGERY IS NOW REVEALING A DENSE ASH CLOUD MOVING SOUTHEAST OF THE
SUMMIT. MODEL SOUNDING GUIDANCE INDICATES THAT ASH MOVING SOUTHEAST
WOULD BE CLOSER TO FL300 AND THIS IS NOW THE ESTIMATED HEIGHT FOR
THE ERUPTION.
.
AS OF 1845Z...VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS ASH CLOUD EXTENDING 41
KM (22 NMI) TO THE POINT 0148S 7813W. THE ASH PLUME IS 10 KM (NMI)
WIDE. THERE ARE CLOUDS WEST OF THE SUMMIT WHICH MAY BE OBSCURING
POSSIBLE ASH MOVING WEST AT LEVELS CLOSER TO SUMMIT.
.
TRAJECTORY: ANY ASH FROM THE SUMMIT TO FL250 SHOULD MOVE WEST AT 10
TO 20 KTS. ASH FROM FL250 TO FL300 SHOULD MOVE SOUTHEAST AT 5 TO 10
KTS.
.
OUTLOOK: SEE SIGMETS.
.
THE NEXT ADVISORY WILL BE ISSUED BY 06/0100Z.
